Position description and duties
This is a low key, affirming position for a Parish that presently does not have an organized music program. You will have a large office with piano connected to the church building and will be expected to find ways to build a program (with the realization that the congregation is an older, established group of worshipers). There is an active Hispanic Community which may be a resource. There are significant number of children in the religious education department, and that also may be a resource for Sunday worship. The Organ is a newer 3-manual Rodgers and there is a 4-octave set of handbells for a possible handbell choir. Definitely a “snow bird” congregation, which, in some respects, makes summer much easier than winter months. Salary $25K – very negotiable depending on experience and vision and development of programs. Presently, the majority of time will be on the weekend. There are no scheduled rehearsals.
• Provide piano and/or organ accompaniment for 3 Saturday/Sunday liturgies (4:00 PM Saturday; 9:00 AM and 10:30 AM Sunday)
• Support congregational hymn singing, and other musical elements of the liturgy. Development of a cantor program (perhaps paid local college voice majors/high school students)
• Choosing hymns that reinforce scripture of the day
• Play for special services throughout the year, including but not limited to Advent, Christmas Eve, Holy Thursday , Good Friday, and Easter Vigil
• When requested, assist with weddings and funerals (with supplemental compensation).
• Work collegially with occasional guest instrumentalists
• Maintain a high standard of musicianship, preparation and reliability.
Qualifications
• Strong proficiency in organ performance
• Experience in church worship accompaniment, especially in a liturgical or traditional worship setting, preferred.
• Sensitivity to reverent corporate worship and an understanding of the supporting role of music in the life of the church.
• Ability to collaborate well with clergy, choir members and staff.
