Job Description-Parish Musician (Part-time); Part-time position supervised by Rector
Church Organist/Pianist/Choir leader
Purpose: To provide organ and piano music for worship services, lead the choir and other
church functions, including weddings and funerals.
Education, Skills and Ability: Be able to display a professional level of musical talent from
training and experience. Have a thorough working knowledge of the congregation’s
worship services and a theological understanding of church music. Be able to communicate
well and in a friendly manner with clergy, worship committee members, church choir,
fellow employees, and members of the congregation.
Job Performance Requirements:
• Provide organ/piano music in a professional manner for all worship services and all
seasonal and special services.
• Provide organ/piano music for weddings and funerals and be permitted to receive
additional compensation from the parties involved. The use of the organ or piano by a
guest musician may be done by special arrangement of the Parish Musician, Rector and/or
• Facilitate the congregation to sing and worship through the excellent execution of hymns
and liturgy.
• Encourage musical talents and participation of members of the choir and congregation
through organizing and coordinating special musical offerings, including soloists,
instrumentalists, and small ensembles in cooperation with the worship and music
• Arrange for qualified substitute organist or pianist when absent for church services and
notify the Rector or designee in advance. Parish Musician will compensate substitute.• Arrange for organ and piano maintenance with a qualified organ and piano repair person
as needed.
• Assist the Rector or designee in the selection of hymns and be responsible for timely
submission of hymns and special music for the worship bulletin.
• Budget submission to the Vestry on yearly basis. Any music purchases will be determined
by budgetary restraints. (deadline for submission – August 30th)
• To invest 8 –12 hours per week to include 1-2 hours per week with the Choir. Choir will
practice weekly in the season. (October to Trinity Sunday) with some summer special
musical selections.

Job Expectations:
• The applicant shall rehearse sufficiently to maintain a high quality of music.
• An annual performance review will be done.
• The applicant shall seek professional relationships with other church musicians and keep
abreast of developments in worship and liturgy through the associations, continuing
education, and professional church publications.

Job Summary
Reporting to the Director of Traditional Worship this position will be using his/her God given musical gifts for playing the organ and/or piano for church-related events: services (regular and special) and rehearsals.

The Music Director will lead, direct, and assist the choral abilities of our church’s choir. First Presbyterian Church of Lakeland, Florida is a 1,200-member congregation which seeks a full-time organist for Sunday worship services in the sanctuary and chapel, special services and events, and to provide rehearsal accompaniment for adult, youth, children’s choirs, soloists and ensembles. The organist will provide music consultation and play for weddings and funerals as well as assistance with the advertising, marketing and public relations matters related to the Performing Arts Series. The organist will also serve as a consultant regarding the planned renovation and expansion of the ranks and voicing of the church’s four manual Austin pipe organ. Applicants should have a bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in organ and should demonstrate a high level of competence and experience as a church organist and accompanist.
